The power of the riff compelled us!
Compelled us to go see Down when they came to town. And so we did; quite a lot of us actually. To be precise the place was sold out!
Down were alone on the venue, which was a bit surprising, but as we stood there waiting we found out why. Instead of having some small-time local act supporting, Down had decided to bring along some of the greatest names in classic rock and metal to warm the show up. Brave! The way they did it was to fasten a big, white screen all across the front of the stage and played a film on it, showing fun clips of themselves and friends from the road, neatly interwoven with live and promo videos from bands like Ted Nugent, Thin Lizzy, AC/DC and many more.
As the screen fell to the floor after Black Sabbath's Hole In the Sky, the entire band took the stage, powerfully starting the show off with Temptation's Wings. Possibly as a crowd-pleaser, Phil Anselmo was wearing a heavily worn 'Bevar Christiania' shirt.
Down took the crowd by storm, and it seemed like everybody was singing along to the words, jumping up and down, headbanging, waving their arms in the air, or doing something else to show their appreciation.
The band was really feeding of all the energy, and gave an excellent performance, which was great to watch.
There were a lot of dedications among the songs, for instance Lifer was dedicated to Dimebag Darrell, and there were also quite a few songs being played which, according to Phil, they normally don't choose for live sets. Among these was Ghosts Along The Mississippi. Now, I don't know how much truth to put in it, since this was my first Down concert and all, but if it is so, this definitely need to change. That song really grabbed the whole audience, leaving no neck intact.
The show was ended with Bury Me In Smoke, which they also tried to do. I've never seen so much smoke bellowing out from the sides of the stage, literally making it impossible to see further than your nose. The smoke cleared halfway into the song, and a good thing it was, or else we would have missed out on everybody in the band playing around and changing instruments with each other. Great fun!
