KB Hallen, Copenhagen - 2008

A long time ago, something arose from the backyard cemeteries of Iowa.
Some proclaimed it a one-hit wonder, only selling albums because of a stupid gimmick with wearing masks.
Now, almost ten years later, the masks are still here. The outfits may have changed, the look grown darker, but they still have what it takes to put their followers/copies firmly in the ground...

KB Hallen is certainly one of the larger places Copenhagen has to offer as an indoor arena, and the place was completely sold out as Slipknot once again brought their show to our fair town. They have certainly come a long way since the time when they played in Lille Vega for a few hundred people.
Fittingly, their intro song had been chosen to be the old AC/DC song, For Those About To Rock (We Salute You). As the last notes of that song faded out, so did the lights in the hall, and another intro started; a more Slipknotish one you might say, compiled of different noises generated through a computer and at that time the curtains fell to the sides and revealed Joey Jordison wearing a crown of thorns and branches and roots sticking from his hands. All this made him look like something taken straight out of a Japanese horror film.
The second the rest of the band got on stage they began hammering us down with the tunes of Surfacing, and the audience went amok.
There was moshing, jumping and headbanging, and that was just in the back in the seated area!

Slipknot provided us with a very animated show, making sure everyone knew why they are still to be considered one of the top acts of the genre; hell, even one of the top live acts of the entire metal industry. Almost everyone seemed to give all on stage, only Craig #5 Jones (samples, media) was a bit hidden away being placed behind Chris #3 Fehn's impressive percussion kit.
On the other hand, the one that made most of an impression on me was Sid #0 Wilson (turntables) with his eerie impersonation of... something... as he lurked around the stage with a cane. Or jumping into the photopit to get closer to the audience. Or dangling from the side of the elevated percussion set of Shawn #6 Crahan (a.k.a. Clown).
Of course, they also used some of their proven tactics at entertaining us, like Joeys revolving drum-kit and the part where everyone is to sit down and then in synchronisation jump into the air, creating a shockwave as we all land at the same time.

Song-ways they had put a well mixed set together with songs off of all four releases. Notable were the new single Dead Memories, which uncharacteristically shows a much calmer side to the band and an all clean vocal performance from Corey #8 Taylor, and also Prosthetics from their debut album to which Taylor commented; "...a song which we have not played in a very, very long time."
As I have not kept completely up to date with the releases of this band, I did not recognise all of their set, but the energy was definitely still there even though I could not sing along, and I thought it was a great concert.
As a last crowd-pleaser, Sid entered the stage once more after the show was over, bearing a Christiania flag, and then proudly putting it on as a cape to the enthusiastic cheers of the audience.
